A threshold of joy

el portal de la alegria

A Site-Specific Installation

Built for Restaura Festival at Ikal Tulum, this gate was born from what the land offered; fallen branches, rope, and hundreds of colorful Mexican pompoms.

In Mexican tradition, these pompoms; vibrant spheres of yarn; are more than decoration.
They carry meanings of protection, purification, and connection.

Portal de la Alegría, “The Gate of Joy,” celebrates this lineage of color and craft.

It was conceived as an invitation to community — a passage that welcomes everyone to step through with lightness, laughter, and renewal.

What began as humble materials gathered from nature became a symbolic portal: a threshold of joy, built by hand,
and offered back to the land that inspired it.
